Konjunktion bis

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

bis = until.

How it works

Bis (until) introduces a clause that shows the endpoint of an action or state. The verb goes to the end: Ich warte, bis der Zug kommt. Bis can also be a preposition with a time or place: bis Freitag, bis Berlin. Combining bis with nicht can express a continued state, as in Ich bleibe, bis er nicht mehr da ist.

When to use it

Use bis (until) to say how long an action lasts, with the verb at the end.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Putting the verb in second position after bis, as in a main clause. The verb goes to the end: "bis er kommt".

Memory tip

Bis = until: "Ich warte, bis er kommt."
