Konjunktion sodass
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
Result clause: so that / with the result that.
How it works
Sodass (so that) introduces a clause that shows a result. It is different from damit, which shows a purpose. The verb goes to the end: Er hat hart gearbeitet, sodass er befördert wurde. Sodass is often written as one word in modern German, and it is used in both speech and writing.
When to use it
Use sodass (so that) to state a result or consequence, with the verb at the end.
Use cases
- Stating the result of an action: Es regnete stark, sodass das Spiel abgesagt wurde
- Describing a consequence: Die Straße war gesperrt, sodass wir umfahren mussten
- Linking two facts logically: Er ist müde, sodass er früh schläft
Examples
- Es regnete, sodass wir blieben – It rained so we stayed
- Der Zug hatte Verspätung, sodass wir zu spät kamen. – The train was late, so we arrived too late.
- Die Preise steigen, sodass viele Menschen sparen. – Prices are rising, so many people are saving.
- Sie hat viel geübt, sodass sie die Prüfung bestanden hat. – She practised a lot, so she passed the exam.
Common mistake
Confusing sodass with damit (purpose): sodass states a result, damit states a purpose.
Memory tip
Sodass = result (so that it happens); damit = purpose (in order that).
