Konjunktiv II – unreal conditions
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
wenn + Konjunktiv II, Konjunktiv II.
How it works
Unreal conditions (things that are not true or are unlikely) use wenn with the Konjunktiv II in the condition clause and the Konjunktiv II or würde-construction in the result clause: Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich dich besuchen. The structure is the German equivalent of "If I had time, I would visit you."
When to use it
Describe unreal conditions with wenn plus Konjunktiv II in one clause and Konjunktiv II in the other.
Use cases
Examples
- Wenn ich reich wäre, würde ich reisen – If I were rich I would travel
– If it were not raining, we would go to the park.
– If he studied more, he would get better grades.
– If I were a millionaire, I would buy a house.
Common mistake
Using the indicative for unreal conditions: "Wenn ich Zeit hätte" is right, "Wenn ich Zeit habe" is not.
Memory tip
Wenn ich Zeit hätte, würde ich kommen.
