Telling the time (informal)
A1 · Beginner · Basics
The rule
Viertel nach, Viertel vor, fünf vor halb.
How it works
In everyday speech Germans use the 12-hour clock with words such as Viertel (quarter), halb and vor/nach. Viertel nach zwei is 2:15, Viertel vor drei is 2:45, and fünf nach halb vier is 3:35. Use these forms in conversation and learn the formal version for announcements.
When to use it
Tell the time casually with Viertel nach, Viertel vor and fünf vor halb, as Germans do in conversation.
Use cases
- Chatting about plans: Wir treffen uns um Viertel nach acht
- Arranging a meeting with a friend
- Understanding spoken times on the radio and in shops
Examples
- Es ist Viertel vor acht – It is quarter to eight
- Es ist halb elf. – It is 10:30.
- Der Bus kommt in fünf Minuten. – The bus comes in five minutes.
- Um Viertel vor sieben esse ich. – I eat at 6:45.
Common mistake
Mixing up nach and vor, so "Viertel vor drei" is 2:45, not 3:15.
Memory tip
Nach = past the hour, vor = before the next hour. Viertel is a quarter of an hour.
