Verbs with infinitive without zu

B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures

The rule

modals, sehen, hören, lassen, gehen.

How it works

Modal verbs, sehen, hören, lassen, gehen, bleiben, lernen and some others take a bare infinitive without zu: Ich höre dich singen. Ich gehe schwimmen. Learners often add zu after these verbs, which is incorrect. The infinitive is placed at the end of the clause, and in the perfect the double infinitive is used.

When to use it

Use an infinitive without zu after modals, sehen, hören, lassen and gehen.

Examples

Common mistake

Adding zu after sehen, hören or lassen: "Ich sehe ihn kommen" is right.

Memory tip

After sehen, hören, lassen, gehen and modal verbs the infinitive has no zu.
