Zeit expressions with accusative
B1 · Intermediate · Advanced Structures
The rule
jeden Tag, letzte Woche, nächsten Monat.
How it works
Time expressions with jed-, letzt- and nächst- take the accusative: jeden Tag (every day), letzten Monat (last month), nächste Woche (next week). Expressions with the words einen and diesen also take the accusative. This is one of the places where the accusative is used without a verb object.
When to use it
Use the accusative for time expressions like jeden Tag (every day), letzten Monat (last month) and nächste Woche (next week).
Use cases
- Describing routines: Jeden Morgen trinke ich Kaffee
- Talking about the past: Letzten Sommer waren wir in Italien
- Making plans for the future: Nächstes Jahr beginne ich einen Kurs
Examples
- Letztes Jahr war ich in Wien – Last year I was in Vienna
- Dieses Wochenende fahren wir an die Ostsee. – This weekend we are driving to the Baltic Sea.
- Jeden Abend lese ich ein Kapitel. – Every evening I read a chapter.
- Letzten Freitag habe ich Freunde getroffen. – Last Friday I met friends.
Common mistake
Using the dative after letzt-, nächst- or jed- in time phrases: "letzten Monat" not "letztem Monat".
Memory tip
Time expressions with jed-, letzt-, nächst- take the accusative: jeden Tag, letzten Sommer.
