Als vs. wenn

A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs

The rule

als = single past event; wenn = repeated or future events.

How it works

Als is used for a single event in the past, such as Als ich ein Kind war (when I was a child). Wenn is used for repeated events in the past (Wenn ich Zeit hatte, las ich) and for present and future events. Using the wrong one is a very common error, so remember that als is past and single, while wenn is repeated or future.

When to use it

Use als for a single event in the past and wenn for repeated events in the past or any event in the future.

Use cases

Examples

Common mistake

Using wenn for a single past event: "Als ich jung war" is correct, "Wenn ich jung war" is not.

Memory tip

Als = once (in the past), wenn = whenever or future.
