Dative prepositions

A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs

The rule

aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu, gegenüber always take dative.

How it works

Aus (from/out of), bei (at, with), mit (with), nach (after, to), seit (since), von (from, of), zu (to) and gegenüber (opposite) always take the dative. Their meaning shifts with context, for example mit can mean "by means of" or "together with", but the case stays the same.

When to use it

Use aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu and gegenüber, which always take the dative.

Examples

Common mistake

Using the accusative after mit or zu because English says "with me" and "to him" without changing the form.

Memory tip

Memorise the list as a mnemonic: "aus, bei, mit, nach, seit, von, zu" — all dative every time.
