Concessive clauses
B2 · Upper-Intermediate · Style & Precision
The rule
zwar … aber; obwohl; auch wenn.
How it works
Concessive clauses express a contrast or concession: zwar … aber (admittedly … but), obwohl (although), auch wenn (even if) and wenn auch (even though). Zwar is placed in the first part of the sentence, and aber follows. Obwohl and auch wenn send the verb to the end.
When to use it
Express contrast with zwar … aber, obwohl, auch wenn and wenn auch, which all say "although".
Use cases
- Admitting a point and then contrasting it: Das Hotel ist zwar teuer, aber sehr schön
- Giving a concession in an argument: Auch wenn es regnet, gehen wir wandern
- Expressing a contrast in writing: Obwohl die Kosten hoch sind, lohnt sich die Investition
Examples
- Er ist zwar jung, aber erfahren – He is young but experienced
- Er ist zwar jung, aber sehr erfahren. – Admittedly he is young, but very experienced.
- Wenn auch die Zeit knapp ist, schaffen wir es. – Even though time is short, we will manage it.
- Sie kommt, auch wenn sie müde ist. – She is coming, even though she is tired.
Common mistake
Using aber after obwohl; zwar … aber is a separate pattern.
Memory tip
Zwar (admittedly) comes first, aber (but) follows: Er ist zwar alt, aber fit.
