Discourse connectors

C1 · Advanced · Mastery

The rule

demnach, folglich, mithin, indessen.

How it works

Formal connectors such as demnach (accordingly), folglich (consequently), mithin (therefore), indessen (meanwhile or however) and dennoch (nevertheless) link the logic of a text. They sit in the first position of a main clause, so the verb follows them. They signal the structure of an argument and help readers follow it.

When to use it

Link arguments in formal writing with demnach (accordingly), folglich (consequently), mithin (therefore) and indessen (however).

Examples

Common mistake

Using these formal connectors in casual speech, where they sound stiff.

Memory tip

Use folglich and demnach in essays; in conversation, use also or deshalb.
