Position of nicht
A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs
The rule
Before the word negated, otherwise at the end.
How it works
Nicht usually stands directly before the word or phrase it negates. If the whole sentence is negated, nicht goes at the end, usually before a prepositional phrase or after the verb: Ich komme heute nicht. If only one element is negated, nicht goes in front of it: Ich komme nicht heute, sondern morgen.
When to use it
Place nicht correctly: before the element it negates, or at the end of the clause if it negates the whole sentence.
Use cases
- Negating a verb: Ich verstehe das nicht
- Negating an adjective: Das ist nicht schwer
- Negating a specific part: Er kommt nicht mit uns
Examples
- Ich verstehe das nicht – I do not understand that
- Sie spricht nicht gut Deutsch. – She does not speak German well.
- Das Restaurant ist nicht offen. – The restaurant is not open.
- Wir gehen nicht in die Stadt. – We are not going into town.
Common mistake
Placing nicht at the end of a sentence where it should go before a particular word or phrase.
Memory tip
Ask: what is being negated? Put nicht right before it. If the whole sentence is negated, nicht usually goes at the end.
