Reflexive verbs

A2 · Elementary · Cases & Verbs

The rule

sich waschen, sich freuen, sich setzen. Pronoun: mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich.

How it works

A reflexive verb is used with a reflexive pronoun (mich, dich, sich, uns, euch, sich) that refers back to the subject. Examples include sich waschen (to wash oneself), sich freuen (to be glad) and sich interessieren für (to be interested in). Some reflexive verbs are only reflexive in German and not in English.

When to use it

Use reflexive verbs such as sich waschen (to wash oneself) and sich freuen (to be glad), with the matching reflexive pronoun.

Common mistake

Forgetting the reflexive pronoun, for example "Ich freue mich" not "Ich freue".

Memory tip

Learn the verb with sich: "sich freuen auf + accusative", "sich interessieren für + accusative".
