Verb prefix distinctions

B2 · Upper-Intermediate · Style & Precision

The rule

über-, unter-, um-, durch- can be separable or inseparable.

How it works

Some prefixes such as über-, unter-, um-, durch- and wieder- can be separable or inseparable, and the meaning changes with the choice. Übersetzen as a separable verb means "to ferry across" (Wir setzen über), while inseparable übersetzen means "to translate" (Er übersetzt den Text). Stress and context show which form is intended.

When to use it

Recognise that über-, unter-, um-, durch- and wieder- can be separable or inseparable, which changes the meaning.

Examples

Common mistake

Treating every prefix the same way: "übersetzen" can be separable (to ferry) or inseparable (to translate).

Memory tip

Stress tells you: separable prefixes are stressed; inseparable ones are not.
